Learn more about what we’re doing

The process of getting switched-on will move BT's network technology to a system based on Internet Protocol technology, also known as IP.

This technology is being used because:

  • It allows a much greater volume of information to travel through the network more quickly.

The advantages to homes and businesses are:

  • A new generation of faster Internet services will be made possible. You’ll be able to get on with what you want to do without worrying about download speeds.
  • Services will be at least as reliable and secure as they are today.

The switched-on phases

Beginning in Cardiff, the UK switched-on project started in November 2006.
The switched-on project will happen in phases, meaning that the work will cause as little disruption as possible.

The timing will depend on where your business is based and the types of services you use.

Why is it being done this way?

50% of the UK's broadband users will be switched-on first, so they can be established on the new network before the launch of next-generation broadband services in January 2008. In these areas, phone services will be switched-on at a later date. In the rest of the country, phone services will be switched-on first, followed by broadband at a later date.
